Genesis Chapter 38

¹⁵When Judah saw her, he thought that she was a prostitute, for she had covered her face. ¹⁶He turned to her by the road, and said, "Please come, let me come in to you," for he didn't know that she was his daughter-in-law. She said, "What will you give me, that you may come in to me?"

¹⁷He said, "I will send you a young goat from the flock." She said, "Will you give me a pledge, until you send it?"

¹⁸He said, "What pledge will I give you?" She said, "Your signet and your cord, and your staff that is in your hand." He gave them to her, and came in to her, and she conceived by him. ¹⁹She arose, went away, took off her veil, and put on the garments of her widowhood.

²⁰Judah sent the young goat by the hand of his friend, the Adullamite, to receive the pledge from the woman's hand, but he didn't find her. ²¹Then he asked the men of her place, saying, "Where is the cult-prostitute, that was at Enaim by the road?" They said, "There has been no cult-prostitute here."

²²He returned to Judah, and said, "I haven't found her; and also the men of the place said, 'There has been no cult-prostitute here.'" ²³Judah said, "Let her keep it, otherwise we'll be shamed. Behold, I sent this young goat, and you haven't found her."

²⁴About three months later, Judah was clearly told, "Tamar, your daughter-in-law, has played the prostitute. Furthermore, look, she is pregnant by prostitution." Judah said, "Bring her out, and let her be burned." ²⁵When she was brought out, she sent to her father-in-law, saying, "I am pregnant by the man who [owns] these." She also said, "Please discern whose these are, the signet, the cords, and the staff."

²⁶Judah acknowledged them, and said, "She is more righteous than I, because I didn't give her to Shelah, my son." He knew her again no more.

²⁷In the time of her travail, behold, twins were in her womb. ²⁸When she travailed, one put out a hand, and the midwife took and tied a scarlet thread on his hand, saying, "This came out first." ²⁹As he drew back his hand, behold, his brother came out, and she said, "Why have you made a breach for yourself?" Therefore his name was called Perez. ³⁰Afterward his brother came out, who had the scarlet thread on his hand, and his name was called Zerah.

1 Samuel Chapter 15

³²Then Samuel said, "Bring here to me Agag king of the Amalekites!" Agag came to him cheerfully. Agag said, "Surely the bitterness of death is past."

³³Samuel said, "As your sword has made women childless, so your mother will be childless among women!" Samuel cut Agag in pieces before Yahweh in Gilgal.

³⁴Then Samuel went to Ramah; and Saul went up to his house to Gibeah of Saul. ³⁵Samuel came no more to see Saul until the day of his death; for Samuel mourned for Saul: and Yahweh grieved that he had made Saul king over Israel.

1 Samuel Chapter 16

¹Yahweh said to Samuel, "How long will you mourn for Saul, since I have rejected him from being king over Israel? Fill your horn with oil, and go. I will send you to Jesse the Bethlehemite; for I have provided a king for myself among his sons."

²Samuel said, "How can I go? If Saul hears it, he will kill me." Yahweh said, "Take a heifer with you, and say, I have come to sacrifice to Yahweh. ³Call Jesse to the sacrifice, and I will show you what you shall do. You shall anoint to me him whom I name to you."

⁴Samuel did what Yahweh said, and came to Bethlehem. The elders of the city came to meet him trembling, and said, "Do you come peaceably?"

⁵He said, "Peaceably; I have come to sacrifice to Yahweh. Sanctify yourselves, and come with me to the sacrifice." He sanctified Jesse and his sons, and called them to the sacrifice. ⁶When they had come, he looked at Eliab and said, "Surely Yahweh's anointed is before him."

⁷But Yahweh said to Samuel, "Don't look on his face, or on the height of his stature; because I have rejected him: for [Yahweh sees] not as man sees; for man looks at the outward appearance, but Yahweh looks at the heart."

⁸Then Jesse called Abinadab, and made him pass before Samuel. He said, "Neither has Yahweh chosen this one." ⁹Then Jesse made Shammah to pass by. He said, "Neither has Yahweh chosen this one." ¹⁰Jesse made seven of his sons to pass before Samuel. Samuel said to Jesse, "Yahweh has not chosen these." ¹¹Samuel said to Jesse, "Are all your children here?" He said, "There remains yet the youngest, and behold, he is keeping the sheep." Samuel said to Jesse, "Send and get him; for we will not sit down until he comes here."

¹²He sent, and brought him in. Now he was ruddy, and withal of a beautiful face, and fine to look on. Yahweh said, "Arise, anoint him; for he is the one."

¹³Then Samuel took the horn of oil, and anointed him in the midst of his brothers: and the Spirit of Yahweh came mightily on David from that day forward. So Samuel rose up, and went to Ramah. ¹⁴Now the Spirit of Yahweh departed from Saul, and an evil spirit from Yahweh troubled him. ¹⁵Saul's servants said to him, "See now, an evil spirit from God troubles you. ¹⁶Let our lord now command your servants who are before you, to seek out a man who is a skillful player on the harp. Then when the evil spirit from God is on you, he will play with his hand, and you will be well."

¹⁷Saul said to his servants, "Provide me now a man who can play well, and bring him to me."

¹⁸Then one of the young men answered, and said, "Behold, I have seen a son of Jesse the Bethlehemite, who is skillful in playing, a mighty man of valor, a man of war, prudent in speech, and a comely person; and Yahweh is with him."

¹⁹Therefore Saul sent messengers to Jesse, and said, "Send me David your son, who is with the sheep."

²⁰Jesse took a donkey loaded with bread, and a bottle of wine, and a young goat, and sent them by David his son to Saul. ²¹David came to Saul, and stood before him. He loved him greatly; and he became his armor bearer. ²²Saul sent to Jesse, saying, "Please let David stand before me; for he has found favor in my sight." ²³When the spirit from God was on Saul, David took the harp, and played with his hand: so Saul was refreshed, and was well, and the evil spirit departed from him.

2 Chronicles Chapter 12

⁵Now Shemaiah the prophet came to Rehoboam, and to the princes of Judah, who were gathered together to Jerusalem because of Shishak, and said to them, "Yahweh says, 'You have forsaken me, therefore have I also left you in the hand of Shishak.'"

⁶Then the princes of Israel and the king humbled themselves; and they said, "Yahweh is righteous."

⁷When Yahweh saw that they humbled themselves, the word of Yahweh came to Shemaiah, saying, "They have humbled themselves. I will not destroy them; but I will grant them some deliverance, and my wrath shall not be poured out on Jerusalem by the hand of Shishak. ⁸Nevertheless they shall be his servants, that they may know my service, and the service of the kingdoms of the countries."

⁹So Shishak king of Egypt came up against Jerusalem, and took away the treasures of the house of Yahweh, and the treasures of the king's house. He took it all away. He also took away the shields of gold which Solomon had made. ¹⁰King Rehoboam made in their place shields of bronze, and committed them to the hands of the captains of the guard, who kept the door of the king's house. ¹¹As often as the king entered into the house of Yahweh, the guard came and bore them, and brought them back into the guard room. ¹²When he humbled himself, the wrath of Yahweh turned from him, so as not to destroy him altogether: and moreover in Judah there were good things [found].

¹³So king Rehoboam strengthened himself in Jerusalem, and reigned: for Rehoboam was forty-one years old when he began to reign, and he reigned seventeen years in Jerusalem, the city which Yahweh had chosen out of all the tribes of Israel, to put his name there. His mother's name was Naamah the Ammonitess. ¹⁴He did what was evil, because he didn't set his heart to seek Yahweh.

¹⁵Now the acts of Rehoboam, first and last, aren't they written in the histories of Shemaiah the prophet and of Iddo the seer, after the way of genealogies? There were wars between Rehoboam and Jeroboam continually. ¹⁶Rehoboam slept with his fathers, and was buried in the city of David: and Abijah his son reigned in his place.

2 Chronicles Chapter 13

¹In the eighteenth year of king Jeroboam, Abijah began to reign over Judah. ²Three years reigned he in Jerusalem. His mother's name was Micaiah the daughter of Uriel of Gibeah. There was war between Abijah and Jeroboam. ³Abijah joined battle with an army of valiant men of war, even four hundred thousand chosen men: and Jeroboam set the battle in array against him with eight hundred thousand chosen men, who were mighty men of valor.

Mark Chapter 10

¹He arose from there and came into the borders of Judea and beyond the Jordan. Multitudes came together to him again. As he usually did, he was again teaching them.

²Pharisees came to him testing him, and asked him, "Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife?"

³He answered, "What did Moses command you?"

⁴They said, "Moses allowed a certificate of divorce to be written, and to divorce her."

⁵But Jesus said to them, "For your hardness of heart, he wrote you this commandment. ⁶But from the beginning of the creation, God made them male and female. ⁷For this reason a man will leave his father and mother, and will join to his wife, ⁸and the two will become one flesh, so that they are no longer two, but one flesh. ⁹So what God has joined together, let no human separate."

¹⁰In the house, his disciples asked him again about the same matter. ¹¹He said to them, "Whoever divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery against her. ¹²If a woman herself divorces her husband and marries another, she commits adultery."

¹³They were bringing to him little children, that he should touch them, but the disciples rebuked those who were bringing them. ¹⁴But when Jesus saw it, he was moved with indignation and said to them, "Allow the little children to come to me! Don't forbid them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these. ¹⁵Absolutely I tell you, whoever will not receive the kingdom of God like a little child, he will in no way enter into it." ¹⁶He took them in his arms and praised them, laying his hands on them.

¹⁷As he was going out into the way, one ran to him, knelt before him, and asked him, "Good Teacher, what shall I do that I may inherit eternal life?"

¹⁸Jesus said to him, "Why do you call me good? No one is good except one- God. ¹⁹You know the commandments: 'Don't murder,' 'Don't commit adultery,' 'Don't steal,' 'Don't give false testimony,' 'Don't defraud,' 'Honor your father and mother.'"

²⁰He said to him, "Teacher, I have observed all these things from my youth."

²¹Jesus looking at him selflessly-loved him, and said to him, "One thing you lack. Go, sell whatever you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me, taking up the cross."

²²But his face fell at that saying, and he went away sorrowful, for he was one who had great possessions.

²³Jesus looked around and said to his disciples, "How difficult it is for those who have riches to enter into the kingdom of God!"

²⁴The disciples were amazed at his words. But Jesus answered again, "Children, how hard it is for those who trust in riches to enter into the kingdom of God! ²⁵It is easier for a camel to go through a needle's eye than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God."

²⁶They were exceedingly astonished, saying to him, "Then who can be saved?"

²⁷Jesus, looking at them, said, "With men it is impossible, but not with God, for all things are possible with God."
