Exodus 3:18-4:9

14 verses

Exodus Chapter 3

18They will listen to your voice. You will come with the elders of Israel to the king of Egypt, and tell him, 'Yahweh, the God of the Hebrews, has met with us. Now please let us go three days' journey into the wilderness, so we can sacrifice to Yahweh, our God.' 19I know that the king of Egypt won't give you permission to go, no, not by a mighty hand. 20I will put out my hand and strike Egypt with all my wonders which I will do among them, and after that he will let you go. 21I will give this people favor in the sight of the Egyptians, and when you go, you won't go empty-handed. 22But every woman will ask her neighbor, and she who visits her house, for jewels of silver, jewels of gold, and clothing. Put them on your sons, and on your daughters; plunder the Egyptians."

Exodus Chapter 4

1Moses answered, "But, look, they will not believe me, nor listen to my voice; for they will say, 'Yahweh has not appeared to you.'"

2Yahweh said to him, "What is that in your hand?" He said, "A staff."

3He said, "Throw it on the ground." He threw it on the ground, and it became a serpent; and Moses ran away from it.

4Yahweh said to Moses, "Stretch out your hand, and take it by the tail." He stretched out his hand, and took hold of it, and it became a staff in his hand;

5so they can believe that Yahweh, the God of their fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, has [indeed] appeared to you." 6Yahweh said furthermore to him, "Now put your hand inside your cloak." He put his hand inside his cloak, and when he took it out, look, his hand was leprous, as white as snow!

7He said, "Put your hand inside your cloak again." He put his hand inside his cloak again, and when he took it from his cloak, look, it was restored like [the rest of] his flesh.

8"If they will not believe you or listen to the voice of the first sign, they will believe the voice of the latter sign. 9If they will not believe even these two signs or listen to your voice, take some of the river water, and pour it on the dry land. The water which you take from the river will become blood on the dry land."

2 Samuel 12:19-13:14

27 verses

2 Samuel Chapter 12

19But when David saw that his servants were whispering together, David perceived that the child was dead; and David said to his servants, "Is the child dead?" They said, "He is dead."

20Then David arose from the earth, and washed, and anointed himself, and changed his clothing; and he came into the house of Yahweh, and worshiped: then he came to his own house; and when he required, they set bread before him, and he ate. 21Then his servants said to him, "What is this that you have done? You fasted and wept for the child while he was alive; but when the child was dead, you rose up and ate bread."

22He said, "While the child was still alive, I fasted and wept; for I said, 'Who knows whether Yahweh will not be gracious to me, that the child may live?' 23But now he is dead, why should I fast? Can I bring him back again? I shall go to him, but he will not return to me."

24David comforted Bathsheba his wife, and went in to her, and lay with her. She bore a son, and he called his name Solomon. Yahweh loved him; 25and he sent by the hand of Nathan the prophet; and he named him Jedidiah, for Yahweh's sake.

26Now Joab fought against Rabbah of the children of Ammon, and took the royal city. 27Joab sent messengers to David, and said, "I have fought against Rabbah. Yes, I have taken the city of waters. 28Now therefore gather the rest of the people together, and encamp against the city, and take it; lest I take the city, and it be called after my name."

29David gathered all the people together, and went to Rabbah, and fought against it, and took it. 30He took the crown of their king from off his head; and its weight was a talent of gold, and [in it were] precious stones; and it was set on David's head. He brought out the plunder of the city, exceeding much. 31He brought out the people who were there, and put them under saws, and under iron picks, and under axes of iron, and made them pass through the brick kiln. He did so to all the cities of the children of Ammon. David and all the people returned to Jerusalem.

2 Samuel Chapter 13

1After this, Absalom the son of David had a beautiful sister, whose name was Tamar; and Amnon the son of David loved her. 2Amnon was so troubled that he fell sick because of his sister Tamar; for she was a virgin; and it seemed hard to Amnon to do anything to her. 3But Amnon had a friend, whose name was Jonadab, the son of Shimeah, David's brother; and Jonadab was a very subtle man. 4He said to him, "Why, son of the king, are you so sad from day to day? Won't you tell me?" Amnon said to him, "I love Tamar, my brother Absalom's sister."

5Jonadab said to him, "Lay down on your bed, and pretend to be sick. When your father comes to see you, tell him, 'Please let my sister Tamar come and give me bread to eat, and dress the food in my sight, that I may see it, and eat it from her hand.'"

6So Amnon lay down and faked being sick. When the king came to see him, Amnon said to the king, "Please let my sister Tamar come, and make me a couple of cakes in my sight, that I may eat from her hand."

7Then David sent home to Tamar, saying, "Go now to your brother Amnon's house, and prepare food for him." 8So Tamar went to her brother Amnon's house; and he was laid down. She took dough, and kneaded it, and made cakes in his sight, and baked the cakes. 9She took the pan, and poured them out before him; but he refused to eat. Amnon said, "Have all men leave me." Every man went out from him. 10Amnon said to Tamar, "Bring the food into the room, that I may eat from your hand." Tamar took the cakes which she had made, and brought them into the room to Amnon her brother. 11When she had brought them near to him to eat, he took hold of her, and said to her, "Come, lie with me, my sister!"

12She answered him, "No, my brother, do not force me! For no such thing ought to be done in Israel. Don't you do this folly. 13I, where would I carry my shame? And as for you, you will be as one of the fools in Israel. Now therefore, please speak to the king; for he will not withhold me from you."

14However he would not listen to her voice; but being stronger than she, he forced her, and lay with her.

Section 3

2 Chronicles 32:6-21

16 verses

2 Chronicles Chapter 32

6He set captains of war over the people, and gathered them together to him in the wide-place at the gate of the city, and spoke comfortably to them, saying, 7"Be strong and courageous, don't be afraid nor dismayed for the king of Assyria, nor for all the multitude who is with him; for there is a greater with us than with him. 8With him is an arm of flesh; but with us is Yahweh our God to help us, and to fight our battles." The people rested themselves on the words of Hezekiah king of Judah.

9After this Sennacherib king of Assyria sent his servants to Jerusalem, (now he was before Lachish, and all his power with him), to Hezekiah king of Judah, and to all Judah who were at Jerusalem, saying, 10Sennacherib king of Assyria says, "In whom do you trust, that you remain under siege in Jerusalem? 11Doesn't Hezekiah persuade you, to give you over to die by famine and by thirst, saying, 'Yahweh our God will deliver us out of the hand of the king of Assyria?' 12Hasn't the same Hezekiah taken away his high places and his altars, and commanded Judah and Jerusalem, saying, 'You shall worship before one altar, and on it you shall burn incense?' 13Don't you know what I and my fathers have done to all the peoples of the lands? Were the gods of the nations of the lands in any way able to deliver their land out of my hand? 14Who was there among all the gods of those nations which my fathers utterly destroyed, that could deliver his people out of my hand, that your God should be able to deliver you out of my hand? 15Now therefore don't let Hezekiah deceive you, nor persuade you in this way, neither believe him; for no god of any nation or kingdom was able to deliver his people out of my hand, and out of the hand of my fathers. How much less will your God deliver you out of my hand?"

16His servants spoke yet more against Yahweh God, and against his servant Hezekiah. 17He also wrote letters insulting Yahweh, the God of Israel, and to speak against him, saying, "As the gods of the nations of the lands, which have not delivered their people out of my hand, so shall the God of Hezekiah not deliver his people out of my hand." 18They cried with a loud voice in the Jews' language to the people of Jerusalem who were on the wall, to frighten them, and to trouble them; that they might take the city. 19They spoke of the God of Jerusalem, as of the gods of the peoples of the earth, which are the work of men's hands.

20Hezekiah the king, and Isaiah the prophet the son of Amoz, prayed because of this, and cried to heaven.

21Yahweh sent an angel, who cut off all the mighty men of valor, and the leaders and captains, in the camp of the king of Assyria. So he returned with shame of face to his own land. When he had entered the house of his god, those who came out from his own body killed him there with the sword.

Section 4

Luke 7:11-30

20 verses

Luke Chapter 7

11Soon afterwards, he went to a city called Nain. Many of his disciples, along with a great multitude, went with him. 12Now when he came near to the gate of the city, behold, one who was dead was carried out, the only son of his mother, and she was a widow. Many people of the city were with her. 13When the Lord saw her, he had compassion on her, and said to her, "Don't cry." 14He came near and touched the coffin, and the bearers stood still. He said, "Young man, I tell you, arise!" 15He who was dead sat up, and began to speak. And he gave him to his mother.

16Fear took hold of all, and they glorified God, saying, "A great prophet has arisen among us!" and, "God has visited his people!" 17This report went out concerning him in the whole of Judea, and in all the surrounding region.

18The disciples of John told him about all these things. 19John, calling to himself two of his disciples, sent them to Jesus, saying, "Are you the one who is coming, or should we look for another?" 20When the men had come to him, they said, "John the Baptizer has sent us to you, saying, 'Are you he who comes, or should we look for another?'"

21In that hour he cured many of diseases and plagues and evil spirits; and to many who were blind he gave sight. 22Jesus answered them, "Go and tell John the things which you have seen and heard: that the blind receive their sight, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised up, and the poor have good news preached to them. 23Happier is he who finds no occasion for stumbling in me."

24When John's messengers had departed, he began to tell the multitudes about John, "What did you go out into the wilderness to see? A reed shaken by the wind? 25But what did you go out to see? A man clothed in soft clothing? Behold, those who are gorgeously dressed, and live delicately, are in kings' courts. 26But what did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and much more than a prophet. 27This is he of whom it is written, 'Behold, I send my messenger before your face, who will prepare your way before you.'

28"For I tell you, among those who are born of women there is not a greater prophet than John the Baptizer, yet he who is least in God's Kingdom is greater than he."

29When all the people and the tax collectors heard this, they declared God to be just, having been baptized with John's baptism. 30But the Pharisees and the lawyers rejected the counsel of God, not being baptized by him themselves.
