Genesis Chapter 49

¹Jacob called to his sons, and said: "Gather yourselves together, that I may tell you what will happen to you in the days to come. ²Assemble yourselves, and hear, you sons of Jacob. Listen to Israel, your father. ³Reuben, you are my firstborn, my might, and the beginning of my strength, excelling in dignity, and excelling in power. ⁴Boiling over like water, you won't excel, because you went up to your father's bed, then defiled it. He went up to my couch. ⁵Simeon and Levi are brothers. Their swords are weapons of violence. ⁶My soul, don't enter their council. My glory, don't be united to their assembly; for in their anger they killed men. In their self-will they hamstrung cattle. ⁷Cursed be their anger, for it was fierce; and their wrath, for it was cruel. I will divide them in Jacob, and scatter them in Israel. ⁸Judah, your brothers will praise you. Your hand will be on the neck of your enemies. Your father's sons will bow down before you. ⁹Judah is a lion's cub. From the prey, my son, you have gone up. He stooped down, he crouched as a lion, as a lioness. Who will rouse him up? ¹⁰The scepter will not depart from Judah, nor the ruler's staff from between his feet, until he comes to whom it belongs. The peoples will be obedient to him. ¹¹Binding his foal to the vine, his donkey's colt to the choice vine, he has washed his garments in wine, his robes in the blood of grapes. ¹²His eyes will be red with wine, his teeth white with milk. ¹³Zebulun will live at the haven of the sea. He will be for a haven of ships. His border will be on Sidon. ¹⁴Issachar is a strong donkey, lying down between the saddlebags. ¹⁵He saw a resting place, that it was good, the land, that it was pleasant. He bows his shoulder to the burden, and becomes a servant doing forced labor. ¹⁶Dan will judge his people, as one of the tribes of Israel. ¹⁷Dan will be a serpent on the trail, an adder in the path, That bites the horse's heels, so that his rider falls backward. ¹⁸I have waited for your salvation, Yahweh. ¹⁹A troop will press on Gad, but he will press on their heel. ²⁰Asher's food will be rich. He will produce royal dainties. ²¹Naphtali is a doe set free, who bears beautiful fawns. ²²Joseph is a fruitful vine, a fruitful vine by a spring. His branches run over the wall. ²³The master archers have severely grieved him, shot at him, and persecuted him: ²⁴But his bow remained strong. The arms of his hands were made strong, by the hands of the Mighty One of Jacob, (the shepherd, the stone of Israel is from there). ²⁵By the God of your father, who will help you. By the Almighty, who will bless you, with blessings of heaven above, blessings of the deep that lies below, blessings of the breasts, and of the womb. ²⁶The blessings of your father have prevailed above the blessings of my ancestors, above the boundaries of the ancient hills. They will be on the head of Joseph, on the crown of the head of him who is separated from his brothers. ²⁷Benjamin is a ravenous wolf. In the morning he will devour the prey. In the evening he will divide the plunder."

²⁸All these are the twelve tribes of Israel, and this is what their father spoke to them, and blessed them. He blessed everyone according to his [own] blessing. ²⁹He instructed them, and said to them, "I am to be gathered to my people. Bury me with my fathers in the cave that is in the field of Ephron the Hittite, ³⁰in the cave that is in the field of Machpelah, which is before Mamre, in the land of Canaan, which Abraham bought with the field from Ephron the Hittite as a burial place. ³¹There they buried Abraham and Sarah, his wife. There they buried Isaac and Rebekah, his wife, and there I buried Leah: ³²the field and the cave that is in it, which was purchased from the children of Heth." ³³When Jacob had finished instructing his sons, he gathered up his feet into the bed, breathed his last, and was gathered to his people.

Genesis Chapter 50

2 Samuel Chapter 4

⁹David answered Rechab and Baanah his brother, the sons of Rimmon the Beerothite, and said to them, "As Yahweh lives, who has redeemed my soul out of all adversity, ¹⁰when someone told me, 'Behold, Saul is dead,' thinking to have brought good news, I took hold of him, and killed him in Ziklag, which was the reward I gave him for his news. ¹¹How much more, when wicked men have slaughtered a righteous person in his own house on his bed, shall I not now require his blood of your hand, and take you away from the earth?" ¹²David commanded his young men, and they killed them, and cut off their hands and their feet, and hanged them up beside the pool in Hebron. But they took the head of Ishbosheth, and buried it in the grave of Abner in Hebron.

2 Samuel Chapter 5

¹Then came all the tribes of Israel to David to Hebron, and spoke, saying, "Behold, we are your bone and your flesh. ²In times past, when Saul was king over us, it was you who led out and brought in Israel. Yahweh said to you, 'You shall be shepherd of my people Israel, and you shall be prince over Israel.'" ³So all the elders of Israel came to the king at Hebron; and king David made a covenant with them in Hebron before Yahweh; and they anointed David king over Israel.

⁴David was thirty years old when he began to reign, and he reigned forty years. ⁵In Hebron he reigned over Judah seven years and six months; and in Jerusalem he reigned thirty-three years over all Israel and Judah.

⁶The king and his men went to Jerusalem against the Jebusites, the inhabitants of the land, who spoke to David, saying, "Unless you take away the blind and the lame, you shall not come in here;" thinking, "David can't come in here." ⁷Nevertheless David took the stronghold of Zion; which is the city of David. ⁸David said on that day, "Whoever strikes the Jebusites, let him get up to the watercourse, and strike the lame and the blind, who are hated by David's soul." Therefore they say, "The blind and the lame can't enter the house."

⁹David lived in the stronghold, and called it the city of David. David built around from Millo and inward. ¹⁰David grew greater and greater; for Yahweh, the God of Armies, was with him. ¹¹Hiram king of Tyre sent messengers to David, and cedar trees, and carpenters, and masons; and they built David a house. ¹²David perceived that Yahweh had established him king over Israel, and that he had exalted his kingdom for his people Israel's sake.

¹³David took him more concubines and wives out of Jerusalem, after he had come from Hebron; and there were yet sons and daughters born to David. ¹⁴These are the names of those who were born to him in Jerusalem: Shammua, and Shobab, and Nathan, and Solomon, ¹⁵and Ibhar, and Elishua, and Nepheg, and Japhia, ¹⁶and Elishama, and Eliada, and Eliphelet.

¹⁷When the Philistines heard that they had anointed David king over Israel, all the Philistines went up to seek David; and David heard of it, and went down to the stronghold. ¹⁸Now the Philistines had come and spread themselves in the valley of Rephaim. ¹⁹David inquired of Yahweh, saying, "Shall I go up against the Philistines? Will you deliver them into my hand?" Yahweh said to David, "Go up; for I will certainly deliver the Philistines into your hand."

²⁰David came to Baal Perazim, and David struck them there; and he said, "Yahweh has broken my enemies before me, like the breach of waters." Therefore he called the name of that place Baal Perazim. ²¹They left their images there; and David and his men took them away.

2 Chronicles Chapter 28

¹⁴So the armed men left the captives and the plunder before the princes and all the assembly. ¹⁵The men who have been mentioned by name rose up, and took the captives, and with the plunder clothed all who were naked among them, dressed them, gave them sandals, and gave them something to eat and to drink, anointed them, carried all the feeble of them on donkeys, and brought them to Jericho, the city of palm trees, to their brothers. Then they returned to Samaria.

¹⁶At that time king Ahaz sent to the kings of Assyria to help him. ¹⁷For again the Edomites had come and struck Judah, and carried away captives. ¹⁸The Philistines also had invaded the cities of the lowland, and of the South of Judah, and had taken Beth Shemesh, and Aijalon, and Gederoth, and Soco with its towns, and Timnah with its towns, Gimzo also and its towns: and they lived there. ¹⁹For Yahweh brought Judah low because of Ahaz king of Israel; for he had dealt wantonly in Judah, and trespassed severely against Yahweh. ²⁰Tilgath Pilneser king of Assyria came to him, and distressed him, but didn't strengthen him. ²¹For Ahaz took away a portion out of the house of Yahweh, and out of the house of the king and of the princes, and gave it to the king of Assyria: but it didn't help him.

²²In the time of his distress he trespassed yet more against Yahweh, this same king Ahaz. ²³For he sacrificed to the gods of Damascus, which struck him; and he said, "Because the gods of the kings of Syria helped them, so I will sacrifice to them, that they may help me." But they were the ruin of him, and of all Israel. ²⁴Ahaz gathered together the vessels of God's house, and cut in pieces the vessels of God's house, and shut up the doors of the house of Yahweh; and he made him altars in every corner of Jerusalem. ²⁵In every city of Judah he made high places to burn incense to other gods, and provoked to anger Yahweh, the God of his fathers.

²⁶Now the rest of his acts, and all his ways, first and last, behold, they are written in the book of the kings of Judah and Israel. ²⁷Ahaz slept with his fathers, and they buried him in the city, even in Jerusalem; for they didn't bring him into the tombs of the kings of Israel. Hezekiah his son reigned in his place.

Luke Chapter 3

Luke Chapter 4

¹Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan, and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness ²for forty days, being tempted by the devil. He ate nothing in those days. Afterward, when they were completed, he was hungry.

³The devil said to him, "If you are the Son of God, command this stone to become bread."

⁴Jesus answered him, saying, "It is written, 'Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God.'"

⁵The devil, leading him up on a high mountain, showed him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time. ⁶The devil said to him, "I will give you all this authority, and their glory, for it has been delivered to me; and I give it to whomever I want. ⁷So, if you will worship me, it will all be yours."

⁸Jesus answered him, "Get behind me Satan! For it is written, 'You shall worship ForeverOne your God, and you shall serve him only.'"

⁹He led him to Jerusalem, and set him on the pinnacle of the temple, and said to him, "If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down from here, ¹⁰for it is written, 'He will put his angels in charge of you, to guard you;'

¹¹and, 'On their hands they will bear you up, lest perhaps you dash your foot against a stone.'"

¹²Jesus answering, said to him, "It has been said, 'You shall not tempt ForeverOne your God.'"

¹³When the devil had completed every testing, he departed from him until another time.
