Genesis Chapter 19

¹²Then the men said to Lot, "Do you have anybody else here? Sons-in-law, your sons, your daughters, and whoever you have in the city, take them out of here, ¹³for we will destroy this place, because the outcry against them has grown great in Yahweh's presence so that Yahweh has sent us to destroy it."

¹⁴Lot went out, and spoke to his sons-in-law, who were pledged to marry his daughters, and said, "Get up! Get out of this place, for Yahweh is going to destroy the city!" But he seemed to his sons-in-law to be joking. ¹⁵When the morning came, then the angels hurried Lot, saying, "Get up! Take your wife and your two daughters who are here, otherwise you'll be consumed in the iniquity of the city." ¹⁶But he lingered; and the men grabbed his hand, his wife's hand, and his two daughters' hands, Yahweh being merciful to him; and they took him out, and set him outside of the city. ¹⁷When they had taken them out, he said, "Escape for your life! Don't look behind you, and don't stay anywhere in the plain. Escape to the mountains, otherwise you'll be consumed!"

¹⁸Lot said to them, "Oh, not so, my lord. ¹⁹See now, your servant has found favor in your sight, and you have magnified your loving kindness, which you have shown to me in saving my life. I can't escape to the mountain, for fear that evil overtake me, and I die. ²⁰See now, this city is near to flee to, and it is a little one. Oh let me escape there (isn't it a little one?), and my soul will live."

²¹He said to him, "Behold, I have granted your request concerning this thing also, that I will not overthrow the city of which you have spoken. ²²Hurry, escape there, for I can't do anything until you get there." Therefore the name of the city was called Zoar.

²³The sun had risen on the earth when Lot came to Zoar. ²⁴Then Yahweh rained on Sodom and on Gomorrah sulfur and fire from Yahweh out of the sky. ²⁵He overthrew those cities, all the plain, all the inhabitants of the cities, and what grew on the ground. ²⁶But his wife looked back from behind him, and she became a pillar of salt.

Judges Chapter 1

²⁹Ephraim didn't drive out the Canaanites who lived in Gezer; but the Canaanites lived in Gezer among them. ³⁰Zebulun didn't drive out the inhabitants of Kitron, nor the inhabitants of Nahalol; but the Canaanites lived among them, and became subject to forced labor. ³¹Asher didn't drive out the inhabitants of Acco, nor the inhabitants of Sidon, nor of Ahlab, nor of Achzib, nor of Helbah, nor of Aphik, nor of Rehob; ³²but the Asherites lived among the Canaanites, the inhabitants of the land; for they did not drive them out. ³³Naphtali didn't drive out the inhabitants of Beth Shemesh, nor the inhabitants of Beth Anath; but he lived among the Canaanites, the inhabitants of the land: nevertheless the inhabitants of Beth Shemesh and of Beth Anath became subject to forced labor. ³⁴The Amorites forced the children of Dan into the hill country; for they would not allow them to come down to the valley; ³⁵but the Amorites would dwell in Mount Heres, in Aijalon, and in Shaalbim: yet the hand of the house of Joseph prevailed, so that they became subject to forced labor. ³⁶The border of the Amorites was from the ascent of Akrabbim, from the rock, and upward.

Judges Chapter 2

¹The angel of Yahweh came up from Gilgal to Bochim. He said, "I made you to go up out of Egypt, and have brought you to the land which I swore to your fathers; and I said, 'I will never break my covenant with you: ²and you shall make no covenant with the inhabitants of this land; you shall break down their altars.' But you have not listened to my voice: why have you done this? ³Therefore I also said, I will not drive them out from before you; but they shall be [as thorns] in your sides, and their gods shall be a snare to you."

⁴When the angel of Yahweh spoke these words to all the children of Israel, the people lifted up their voice, and wept. ⁵They called the name of that place Bochim: and they sacrificed there to Yahweh. ⁶Now when Joshua had sent the people away, the children of Israel went every man to his inheritance to possess the land. ⁷The people served Yahweh all the days of Joshua, and all the days of the elders who outlived Joshua, who had seen all the great work of Yahweh that he had worked for Israel. ⁸Joshua the son of Nun, the servant of Yahweh, died, aged one hundred ten. ⁹They buried him in the border of his inheritance in Timnath Heres, in the hill country of Ephraim, on the north of the mountain of Gaash. ¹⁰Also all that generation were gathered to their fathers: and there arose another generation after them, who didn't know Yahweh, nor yet the work which he had worked for Israel. ¹¹The children of Israel did what was evil in the sight of Yahweh, and served the Baals; ¹²and they abandoned Yahweh, the God of their fathers, who brought them out of the land of Egypt, and followed other gods, of the gods of the peoples who were around them, and bowed themselves down to them: and they provoked Yahweh to anger. ¹³They abandoned Yahweh, and served Baal and the Ashtaroth. ¹⁴The anger of Yahweh burned against Israel, and he delivered them into the hands of raiders who plundered them; and he sold them into the hands of their enemies all around, so that they could not any longer stand before their enemies. ¹⁵Wherever they went out, the hand of Yahweh was against them for evil, as Yahweh had spoken, and as Yahweh had sworn to them: and they were very distressed. ¹⁶Yahweh raised up judges, who saved them out of the hand of those who plundered them. ¹⁷Yet they didn't listen to their judges; for they played the prostitute after other gods, and bowed themselves down to them: they turned aside quickly out of the way in which their fathers walked, obeying the commandments of Yahweh; [but] they didn't do so.

1 Chronicles Chapter 12

³¹Of the half-tribe of Manasseh eighteen thousand, who were mentioned by name, to come and make David king. ³²Of the children of Issachar, men who had understanding of the times, to know what Israel ought to do, the heads of them were two hundred; and all their brothers were at their commandment. ³³Of Zebulun, those who were able to go out in the army, who could set the battle in array, with all kinds of instruments of war, fifty thousand, and who could order [the battle array, and were] not of double heart. ³⁴Of Naphtali one thousand captains, and with them with shield and spear thirty-seven thousand. ³⁵Of the Danites who could set the battle in array, twenty-eight thousand six hundred. ³⁶Of Asher, those who were able to go out in the army, who could set the battle in array, forty thousand. ³⁷On the other side of the Jordan, of the Reubenites, and the Gadites, and of the half-tribe of Manasseh, with all kinds of instruments of war for the battle, one hundred twenty thousand.

³⁸All these being men of war, who could order the battle array, came with a perfect heart to Hebron, to make David king over all Israel: and all the rest also of Israel were of one heart to make David king. ³⁹They were there with David three days, eating and drinking; for their brothers had made preparation for them. ⁴⁰Moreover those who were near to them, [even] as far as Issachar and Zebulun and Naphtali, brought bread on donkeys, and on camels, and on mules, and on oxen, food of meal, cakes of figs, and clusters of raisins, and wine, and oil, and cattle, and sheep in abundance: for there was joy in Israel.

1 Chronicles Chapter 13

¹David consulted with the captains of thousands and of hundreds, even with every leader. ²David said to all the assembly of Israel, "If it seems good to you, and if it is of Yahweh our God, let us send abroad everywhere to our brothers who are left in all the land of Israel, with whom the priests and Levites are in their cities that have suburbs, that they may gather themselves to us; ³and let us bring again the ark of our God to us. For we didn't seek it in the days of Saul."

⁴All the assembly said that they would do so; for the thing was right in the eyes of all the people. ⁵So David assembled all Israel together, from the Shihor [the brook] of Egypt even to the entrance of Hamath, to bring the ark of God from Kiriath Jearim.

⁶David went up, and all Israel, to Baalah, [that is], to Kiriath Jearim, which belonged to Judah, to bring up from there the ark of God Yahweh that sits [above] the throne-angels, that is called by the Name. ⁷They carried the ark of God on a new cart, [and brought it] out of the house of Abinadab; and Uzza and Ahio drove the cart. ⁸David and all Israel played before God with all their might, even with songs, and with harps, and with stringed instruments, and with tambourines, and with cymbals, and with trumpets.

Matthew Chapter 17

²²While they were staying in Galilee, Jesus said to them, "The Son of Man is about to be delivered up into the hands of men, ²³and they will kill him, and the third day he will be raised up."

They were exceedingly sorry.

²⁴When they had come to Capernaum, those who collected the didrachma coins came to Peter, and said, "Doesn't your teacher pay the didrachma?" ²⁵He said, "Yes."

When he came into the house, Jesus anticipated him, saying, "What do you think, Simon? From whom do the kings of the earth receive toll or tribute? From their sons, or from strangers?"

²⁶Peter said to him, "From strangers."

Jesus said to him, "Therefore the sons are exempt. ²⁷But, lest we cause them to stumble, go to the sea, cast a hook, and take up the first fish that comes up. When you have opened its mouth, you will find a stater coin. Take that, and give it to them for me and you."

Matthew Chapter 18

¹In that hour the disciples came to Jesus, saying, "Who then is greatest in the Kingdom of Heaven?"

²Jesus called a little child to himself, and set him in the middle of them ³and said, "Absolutely I tell you, unless you turn and become as little children, you will in no way enter into the Kingdom of Heaven. ⁴So, whoever humbles himself as this little child is the greatest in the Kingdom of Heaven. ⁵Whoever receives one such little child in my name receives me, ⁶but whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in me to stumble, it would be better for him if a huge millstone were hung around his neck and that he were sunk in the depths of the sea.

⁷"Woe to the world because of occasions of stumbling! For it must be that the occasions come, but woe to that person through whom the occasion comes! ⁸If your hand or your foot causes you to stumble, cut it off and throw it from you. It is better for you to enter into life maimed or crippled, rather than having two hands or two feet to be thrown into the eternal fire. ⁹If your eye causes you to stumble, pluck it out and throw it from you. It is better for you to enter into life with one eye, rather than having two eyes to be thrown into the Gehenna of fire. ¹⁰See that you don't despise one of these little ones, for I tell you that in heaven their angels always see the face of my Father who is in heaven. ¹¹[*For the Son of Man came to save what was lost.]
