Exodus Chapter 34

²⁹When Moses came down from Mount Sinai with the two tablets of the testimony in Moses' hand, when he came down from the mountain, Moses didn't know that the skin of his face shone because of his speaking with him. ³⁰When Aaron and all the children of Israel saw Moses, behold, the skin of his face shone; and they were afraid to come near him. ³¹Moses called to them, and Aaron and all the rulers of the congregation returned to him; and Moses spoke to them. ³²Afterward all the children of Israel came near, and he gave them all the commandments that Yahweh had told him on Mount Sinai. ³³When Moses was done speaking with them, he put a veil on his face. ³⁴But when Moses went in to Yahweh's presence to speak with him, he took the veil off, until he came out; and he came out, and spoke to the children of Israel what he was commanded. ³⁵The children of Israel saw Moses' face, that the skin of Moses' face shone; so Moses put the veil on his face again, until he went in to speak with him.

Exodus Chapter 35

¹Moses assembled all the congregation of the children of Israel, and said to them, "These are the words which Yahweh has commanded, that you should do them. ²'Work will be done for six days, but the seventh day will be a holy day for you, a Sabbath of solemn rest to Yahweh. Whoever does any work on it must be put to death. ³Don't kindle any fire throughout your habitations on the Sabbath day.'"

2 Kings Chapter 10

⁶Then he wrote a letter the second time to them, saying, "If you are on my side, and if you will listen to my voice, take the heads of the men your master's sons, and come to me to Jezreel by tomorrow this time." Now the king's sons, being seventy people, were with the great men of the city, who brought them up. ⁷When the letter came to them, they took the king's sons and killed them, even seventy people, and put their heads in baskets, and sent them to him to Jezreel. ⁸A messenger came, and told him, "They have brought the heads of the king's sons." He said, "Lay them in two heaps at the entrance of the gate until the morning." ⁹In the morning he went out, and stood, and said to all the people, "You are righteous. Behold, I conspired against my master, and killed him; but who struck all these? ¹⁰Know now that nothing shall fall to the earth of the word of Yahweh, which Yahweh spoke concerning the house of Ahab. For Yahweh has done what he spoke by his servant Elijah."

¹¹So Jehu struck all that remained of the house of Ahab in Jezreel, with all his great men, his familiar friends, and his priests, until he left him none remaining.

¹²He arose and departed, and went to Samaria. As he was at the shearing house of the shepherds on the way, ¹³Jehu met with the brothers of Ahaziah king of Judah, and said, "Who are you?" They answered, "We are the brothers of Ahaziah. We are going down to greet the children of the king and the children of the queen."

¹⁴He said, "Take them alive!" They took them alive, and killed them at the pit of the shearing house, even forty-two men. He didn't leave any of them.

¹⁵When he had departed from there, he met Jehonadab the son of Rechab coming to meet him. He greeted him, and said to him, "Is your heart right, as my heart is with your heart?" Jehonadab answered, "It is." "If it is, give me your hand." He gave him his hand; and he took him up to him into the chariot. ¹⁶He said, "Come with me, and see my zeal for Yahweh." So they made him ride in his chariot. ¹⁷When he came to Samaria, he struck all who remained to Ahab in Samaria, until he had destroyed him, according to the word of Yahweh, which he spoke to Elijah.

¹⁸Jehu gathered all the people together, and said to them, "Ahab served Baal a little; but Jehu will serve him greatly. ¹⁹Now therefore call to me all the prophets of Baal, all of his worshippers, and all of his priests. Let none be absent; for I have a great sacrifice to Baal. Whoever is absent, he shall not live." But Jehu did it in subtlety, intending that he might destroy the worshippers of Baal.

²⁰Jehu said, "Sanctify a solemn assembly for Baal!" They proclaimed it.

²¹Jehu sent through all Israel; and all the worshippers of Baal came, so that there was not a man left that didn't come. They came into the house of Baal; and the house of Baal was filled from one end to another. ²²He said to him who was over the vestry, "Bring out robes for all the worshippers of Baal!" He brought robes out to them.

²³Jehu went with Jehonadab the son of Rechab into the house of Baal. Then he said to the worshippers of Baal, "Search, and look that there are here with you none of the servants of Yahweh, but the worshippers of Baal only."

²⁴They went in to offer sacrifices and burnt offerings. Now Jehu had appointed him eighty men outside, and said, "If any of the men whom I bring into your hands escape, [he who lets him go], his life shall be for the life of him."

²⁵As soon as he had finished offering the burnt offering, Jehu said to the guard and to the captains, "Go in, and kill them! Let none escape." They struck them with the edge of the sword; and the guard and the captains threw them out, and went to the city of the house of Baal. ²⁶They brought out the pillars that were in the house of Baal, and burned them. ²⁷They broke down the pillar of Baal, and broke down the house of Baal, and made it a latrine, to this day. ²⁸Thus Jehu destroyed Baal out of Israel.

²⁹However, Jehu didn't depart from the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, with which he made Israel to sin- the golden calves that were in Bethel and that were in Dan. ³⁰Yahweh said to Jehu, "Because you have done well in executing what is right in my eyes, [and] have done to the house of Ahab exactly as was in my heart, your sons of the fourth generation shall sit on the throne of Israel."

³¹But Jehu took no heed to walk in the law of Yahweh, the God of Israel, with all his heart. He didn't depart from the sins of Jeroboam, with which he made Israel to sin.

Job Chapter 1

¹There was a man in the land of Uz, whose name was Job. That man was blameless and upright, and one who feared God, and turned away from evil. ²Seven sons and three daughters were born to him. ³His possessions were seven thousand sheep, three thousand camels, five hundred yoke of oxen, five hundred female donkeys, and a very great household; so that this man was the greatest of all the children of the east. ⁴His sons went and held a feast in the house of each one on his birthday; and they sent and called for their three sisters to eat and to drink with them. ⁵When the days of their feasting had run their course Job sent [for them] and consecrated them. He would rise up early in the morning, and offer burnt offerings according to the number of them all. For Job said, "It may be that my sons have sinned, and renounced God in their hearts." Job did this continually.

⁶Now on the day when God's sons came to present themselves in Yahweh's presence, Satan also came among them. ⁷Yahweh said to Satan, "Where have you come from?"

Then Satan answered Yahweh, and said, "From going back and forth in the earth, and from walking up and down in it."

⁸Yahweh said to Satan, "Have you considered my servant, Job? For there is no one like him in the earth, a blameless and an upright man, one who fears God, and turns away from evil."

⁹Then Satan answered Yahweh, and said, "Does Job fear God for nothing? ¹⁰Haven't you made a hedge around him, and around his house, and around all that he has, on every side? You have blessed the work of his hands, and his livestock has spread throughout the land. ¹¹But reach out your hand now, and touch all that is his, and surely he will renounce you to your face."

¹²Yahweh said to Satan, "Look, all that he has is in your grasp. Except, don't stretch out your hand against him [personally]."

So Satan went out from the presence of Yahweh. ¹³It happened one day when his sons and his daughters were eating and drinking wine in their oldest brother's house, ¹⁴that a messenger came to Job, and said, "The oxen were plowing, and the donkeys feeding beside them, ¹⁵and the Sabeans attacked, and took them away. Yes, they have killed the servants with the edge of the sword, and I alone have escaped to tell you."

¹⁶While he was still speaking, another also came and said, "The fire of God has fallen from the sky, and has burned up the sheep and the servants, and consumed them, and I alone have escaped to tell you."

¹⁷While he was still speaking, another also came and said, "The Chaldeans made three bands, and swept down on the camels, and have taken them away, yes, and killed the servants with the edge of the sword; and I alone have escaped to tell you."

¹⁸While he was still speaking, there came also another, and said, "Your sons and your daughters were eating and drinking wine in their oldest brother's house, ¹⁹and see, there came a great wind from the wilderness, and struck the four corners of the house, and it fell on the young men, and they are dead. I alone have escaped to tell you."

²⁰Then Job arose, and tore his robe, and shaved his head, and fell down on the ground, and worshiped. ²¹He said, "Naked I came from my mother's womb, and naked I will return there. Yahweh gave, and Yahweh has taken away. Blessed be Yahweh's name." ²²In all this, Job didn't sin, or charge God with wrongdoing.

John Chapter 11

³²So when Mary came to where Jesus was and saw him, she fell down at his feet, saying to him, "Lord, if you would have been here, my brother wouldn't have died."

³³So when Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews weeping who came with her, he groaned in the spirit, and was troubled, ³⁴and said, "Where have you laid him?" They told him, "Lord, come and see."

³⁵Jesus wept.

³⁶So the Jews said, "See how much affection he had for him!" ³⁷Some of them said, "Couldn't this man, who opened the eyes of him who was blind, have also kept this man from dying?"

³⁸So Jesus, again groaning in himself, came to the tomb. Now it was a cave, and a stone lay against it. ³⁹Jesus said, "Take away the stone." Martha, the sister of him who was dead, said to him, "Lord, by this time there is a stench, for he has been dead four days."

⁴⁰Jesus said to her, "Didn't I tell you that if you believed, you would see God's glory?"

⁴¹So they took away the stone from the place where the dead man was lying. Jesus lifted up his eyes, and said, "Father, I thank you that you listened to me. ⁴²I know that you always listen to me, but because of the multitude standing around I said this, that they may believe that you sent me." ⁴³When he had said this, he cried with a loud voice, "Lazarus, come out!"

⁴⁴He who was dead came out, bound hand and foot with wrappings, and his face was wrapped around with a cloth. Jesus said to them, "Free him, and let him go."

⁴⁵So many of the Jews who came to Mary and saw what Jesus did believed in him. ⁴⁶But some of them went away to the Pharisees and told them the things which Jesus had done. ⁴⁷So the chief priests and the Pharisees gathered a council, and said, "What are we doing? For this man does many signs. ⁴⁸If we leave him alone like this, everyone will believe in him, and the Romans will come and take away both our place and our nation."

⁴⁹But a certain one of them, Caiaphas, being high priest that year, said to them, "You know nothing at all, ⁵⁰nor do you consider that it is advantageous for us that one man should die for the people, and that the whole nation not perish." ⁵¹Now he didn't say this of himself, but being high priest that year, he prophesied that Jesus would die for the nation, ⁵²and not for the nation only, but that he might also gather together into one the children of God who are scattered. ⁵³So from that day forward they took counsel that they might put him to death. ⁵⁴So Jesus no longer walked openly among the Jews, but departed from there into the country near the wilderness, to a city called Ephraim. He stayed there with his disciples.
