Exodus Chapter 18

¹⁷Moses' father-in-law said to him, "The thing that you do is not good. ¹⁸You will surely wear away, both you, and this people that is with you; for the thing is too heavy for you. You are not able to perform it yourself alone. ¹⁹Listen now to my voice. I will give you counsel, and God be with you. You represent the people before God, and bring the cases to God. ²⁰Teach them the statutes and the laws, and show them the way they must walk in, and the work they must do. ²¹Furthermore, provide able men who fear God from all the people, men of truth, hating unjust gain, and put [them] over them [as] rulers of thousands, rulers of hundreds, rulers of fifties, and rulers of tens. ²²Let them judge the people at all times. They must bring every great matter to you, but every small matter let them judge themselves. So it will be easier for you, and let them share the load with you. ²³If you will do this thing, and God commands you so, then you will be able to endure, and all these people will also go to their place in peace."

²⁴So Moses listened to the voice of his father-in-law, and did all that he had said. ²⁵Moses chose able men from all Israel, and made them heads over the people, rulers of thousands, rulers of hundreds, rulers of fifties, and rulers of tens. ²⁶They judged the people at all times. They brought the hard cases to Moses, but every small matter they judged themselves. ²⁷Moses let his father-in-law depart, and he went his way into his own land.

Exodus Chapter 19

¹In the third month after the children of Israel had left the land of Egypt, on that same day they came into the wilderness of Sinai. ²When they had departed from Rephidim, and had come to the wilderness of Sinai, they camped in the wilderness; and there Israel camped near the mountain. ³Moses went up to God, and Yahweh called to him from the mountain, saying, "Tell the house of Jacob, and the children of Israel this: ⁴'You have seen what I did to the Egyptians, and how I bore you on eagles' wings, and brought you to myself. ⁵Now therefore, if you will indeed obey my voice and keep my covenant, then you'll be my special treasure from among all peoples; for all the earth is mine; ⁶and you'll be a kingdom of priests and a holy nation to me.' These are the words for you to tell the children of Israel."

1 Kings Chapter 8

⁴⁶If they sin against you (for there is no man who doesn't sin), and you are angry with them, and deliver them to the enemy, so that they carry them away captive to the land of the enemy, far off or near; ⁴⁷yet if they shall repent in the land where they are carried captive, and turn again, and make supplication to you in the land of those who carried them captive, saying, 'We have sinned, and have done perversely; we have dealt wickedly;' ⁴⁸if they return to you with all their heart and with all their soul in the land of their enemies, who carried them captive, and pray to you toward their land, which you gave to their fathers, the city which you have chosen, and the house which I have built for your name: ⁴⁹then hear their prayer and their supplication in heaven, your dwelling place, and maintain their cause; ⁵⁰and forgive your people who have sinned against you, and all their transgressions in which they have transgressed against you; and give them compassion before those who carried them captive, that they may have compassion on them ⁵¹(for they are your people, and your inheritance, which you brought here out of Egypt, from the midst of the furnace of iron); ⁵²that your eyes may be open to the supplication of your servant, and to the supplication of your people Israel, to listen to them whenever they cry to you. ⁵³For you separated them from among all the peoples of the earth, to be your inheritance, as you spoke by Moses your servant, when you brought our fathers out of Egypt, LordOfMine Yahweh."

⁵⁴When Solomon had finished praying all this prayer and supplication to Yahweh, he arose from before the altar of Yahweh, from kneeling on his knees with his hands spread out toward heaven. ⁵⁵He stood, and blessed all the assembly of Israel with a loud voice, saying, ⁵⁶"Blessed be Yahweh, who has given rest to his people Israel, exactly as he promised. There has not failed one word of all his good promise, which he promised by Moses his servant. ⁵⁷May Yahweh our God be with us, as he was with our fathers. Let him not leave us, nor forsake us; ⁵⁸that he may incline our hearts to him, to walk in all his ways, and to keep his commandments, and his statutes, and his ordinances, which he commanded our fathers. ⁵⁹Let these my words, with which I have made supplication before Yahweh, be near to Yahweh our God day and night, that he may maintain the cause of his servant, and the cause of his people Israel, as every day shall require; ⁶⁰that all the peoples of the earth may know that Yahweh, he is God. There is no one else.

⁶¹"Let your heart therefore be perfect with Yahweh our God, to walk in his statutes, and to keep his commandments, as it is today."

⁶²The king, and all Israel with him, offered sacrifice before Yahweh. ⁶³Solomon offered for the sacrifice of peace offerings, which he offered to Yahweh, twenty two thousand head of cattle and one hundred twenty thousand sheep. So the king and all the children of Israel dedicated Yahweh's house. ⁶⁴That same day the king made the middle of the court holy that was before the house of Yahweh; for there he offered the burnt offering, and the meal offering, and the fat of the peace offerings, because the bronze altar that was before Yahweh was too little to receive the burnt offering, and the meal offering, and the fat of the peace offerings.

⁶⁵So Solomon held the feast at that time, and all Israel with him, a great assembly, from the entrance of Hamath to the brook of Egypt, before Yahweh our God, seven days and seven [more] days, even fourteen days. ⁶⁶On the eighth day he sent the people away; and they blessed the king, and went to their tents joyful and glad of heart for all the goodness that Yahweh had shown to David his servant, and to Israel his people.

Nehemiah Chapter 3

¹⁵Shallun the son of Colhozeh, the ruler of the district of Mizpah, repaired the spring gate. He built it, covered it, and set up its doors, its bolts, and its bars; and he repaired the wall of the pool of Shelah by the king's garden, [all the way] to the stairs that go down from Davids city. ¹⁶After him, Nehemiah the son of Azbuk, the ruler of half the district of Beth Zur, made repairs to the place opposite the tombs of David, and to the pool that was made, and to the house of the mighty men. ¹⁷After him, the Levites- Rehum the son of Bani made repairs. Next to him, Hashabiah, the ruler of half the district of Keilah, made repairs for his district. ¹⁸After him, their brothers, Bavvai the son of Henadad, the ruler of half the district of Keilah made repairs. ¹⁹Next to him, Ezer the son of Jeshua, the ruler of Mizpah, repaired another portion across from the ascent to the armory at the turning [of the wall]. ²⁰After him, Baruch the son of Zabbai earnestly repaired another portion, from the turning [of the wall] to the door of the house of Eliashib the high priest. ²¹After him, Meremoth the son of Uriah the son of Hakkoz repaired another portion, from the door of the house of Eliashib even to the end of the house of Eliashib. ²²After him, the priests, the men of the surrounding area made repairs. ²³After them, Benjamin and Hasshub made repairs across from their house. After them, Azariah the son of Maaseiah the son of Ananiah made repairs beside his own house. ²⁴After him, Binnui the son of Henadad repaired another portion, from the house of Azariah to the turning [of the wall], and to the corner. ²⁵Palal the son of Uzai [made repairs] opposite the turning [of the wall], and the tower that stands out from the upper house of the king, which is by the court of the guard. After him Pedaiah the son of Parosh [made repairs]. ²⁶(Now the temple servants lived in Ophel, to the place opposite the water gate toward the east, and the tower that stands out.) ²⁷After him the Tekoites repaired another portion, opposite the great tower that stands out, and to the wall of Ophel.

²⁸Above the horse gate, the priests made repairs, everyone across from his own house. ²⁹After them, Zadok the son of Immer made repairs across from his own house. After him, Shemaiah the son of Shecaniah, the keeper of the east gate, made repairs. ³⁰After him, Hananiah the son of Shelemiah, and Hanun, the sixth son of Zalaph, repaired another portion. After him, Meshullam the son of Berechiah made repairs across from his room. ³¹After him, Malchijah, one of the goldsmiths to the house of the temple servants, and of the merchants, made repairs opposite the gate of Hammiphkad and to the ascent of the corner. ³²Between the ascent of the corner and the sheep gate, the goldsmiths and the merchants made repairs.

Luke Chapter 20

²⁷Some of the Sadducees came to him, those who deny that there is a resurrection. ²⁸They asked him, "Teacher, Moses wrote to us that if a man's brother dies having a wife, and he is childless, his brother should take the wife and raise up children for his brother. ²⁹So there were seven brothers. The first took a wife, and died childless. ³⁰The second took her [to be his] wife, and he died childless. ³¹The third took her and, similarly all seven as well. They left no children, and died. ³²After that the woman also died. ³³So in the resurrection whose wife of them will she be? For all seven had her as a wife."

³⁴Jesus said to them, "The sons of this age marry, and are given in marriage. ³⁵But those who are considered worthy to attain to that age and the resurrection from the dead neither marry nor are given in marriage. ³⁶For they can't die any more, for they are like the angels, and are sons of God, being sons of the resurrection. ³⁷But that the dead are raised, even Moses showed at the bush, when he called ForeverOne 'The God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.' ³⁸Now he is not the God of the dead, but of the living, for all are alive to him."

³⁹Some of the scribes answered, "Teacher, you speak well." ⁴⁰They didn't dare to ask him any more questions.

⁴¹He said to them, "Why do they say that AnointedOne is David's son? ⁴²David himself says in the book of Psalms, 'ForeverOne said to my Lord, "Sit at my right hand, ⁴³until I make your enemies the footstool of your feet."'

⁴⁴"David therefore calls him Lord, so how is he his son?"

⁴⁵In the hearing of all the people, he said to his disciples, ⁴⁶"Beware of those scribes who like to walk in long robes, and love greetings in the marketplaces, the best seats in the synagogues, and the best places at feasts; ⁴⁷who devour widows' houses, and for a pretense make long prayers: these will receive greater condemnation."

Luke Chapter 21

¹He looked up and saw the rich people who were putting their gifts into the treasury. ²He saw a certain poor widow casting in two small brass coins. ³He said, "Truly I tell you, this poor widow put in more than all of them, ⁴for all these put in gifts for God from their abundance, but she, out of her poverty, put in all that she had to live on."
